On 6th March, PBI Kenya hosted the third and final session in our series of workshops examining the issues facing Human Rights Defenders (HRD) in exile in Kenya. January 2017: MSJC Invisible Mandelas Award and Office Opening

On January 7th PBI Kenya’s partner Mathare Social Justice Centre (MSJC) celebrated the official opening of their new office in Mathare. At the event, PBI was proud to present MSJC’s administrative coordinator Stephen Kinuthia Mwangi with the Invisible Mandelasaward, which he accepted on behalf of the members of MSJC. ECOSOC Pro Bono Lawyer Award 2016

On December 8, 2016, PBI Kenya together with our partners at the Law Society of Kenya, Amnesty International Kenya and EACHRights, awarded the ECOSOC Pro Bono Lawyer Award 2016 to Allan Maleche, Executive Director of KELIN (Kenya Legal & Ethical Issues Network on HIV and AIDS). Mr. Maleche has a track-record of successful litigation on the human rights to health. Continue reading

December 2016: Call for Toolkit Organisers

In November PBI Kenya launched the WHRD Toolkit. To ensure that the Toolkit is disseminated widely, is locally owned and continues on as a living document, we are looking for women human rights defenders from the urban settlements to serve a one-year term as Toolkit Organisers (TOs). The TOs, with support from PBI Kenya, will take the lead on the dissemination of the Toolkit in Nairobi’s urban settlements. November 2016: Launch of the WHRD Toolkit

On 25th November PBI Kenya successfully launched the Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRD) Toolkit. The Toolkit seeks to empower and support WHRDs in Nairobi's urban settlements. The launch saw the attendance of WHRDs from various urban settlements, national and international NGOs and international diplomatic community. Andy Barnard, Head of Political, Press & Information section at the Delegation of the European Union to Kenya held the keynote address. Continue reading

November 2016: Nominations for ECOSOC Award

Kenya has a progressive constitution and a strong Bill of Rights, but access to justice unfortunately can be difficult, especially for those from disadvantaged backgrounds and overlooked groups. At Peace Brigades International Kenya, we celebrate those who defend the social and economic human rights of others. We are happy to join with our friends at Amnesty International Kenya, Law Society of Kenya and EACHRights in presenting the annual ECOSOC Award for Pro Bono Lawyers. Continue reading

June 2016: Stephen Mwangi at PBI's 35th Anniversary Conference

This year PBI is celebrating its 35th anniversary, and to honour the occasion PBI UK held a conference on June 17th. The conference featured UN Special Rapporteur Michel Forst and included several panels with participants from backgrounds in government, law, INGOs, and HRDs from Latin America, Nepal, and Kenya. Stephen Kinuthia Mwangi was selected to represent Kenya on the panel about 'The Rule of Law: Uses and Abuses of the Law in relation to Human Rights Defenders.' Continue reading

June 2016: Graffiti workshop at Mathare Social Justice Centre

In early June, Mathare Social Justice Centre (MSJC),  PAWA254 and PBI collaborated on a graffiti workshop in Mathare to officially launch MSJC’s ‘Arts against Violence' campaign. The three day workshop was facilitated by PAWA254's graffiti artist Smoki and provided (prospective) graffiti artists from Mathare with basic graffiti skills. Continue reading

March 2016: Human Rights Training for State Prosecutors

From 14-18 March Peace Brigades International Kenya organised and facilitated a human rights training at Lake Elementaita. It was attended by 28 prosecutors from the Office of Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) as well as additional representatives from Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).
